Promoting Regional Cooperation: The EU-Central Asia Civil Society Forum

The fifth European Union-Central Asia Civil Society Forum took place in Almaty on Jan. 28, bringing together 150 representatives from EU institutions, UN agencies, regional governments, and civil society organizations. The three-day forum focused on fostering regional cooperation through discussions on gender equality, youth participation, digital transformation, and climate change.

EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan Aleška Simkić highlighted the crucial role of civil society in democratic governance and sustainable development. The EU has allocated 4.5 million euros to the EU Civil Society Facility in Central Asia, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in empowering civil society in the region.

UN Resident Coordinator Stephen O’Malley emphasized the significance of civil society in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlighted collaborative efforts between the UN and the EU in advancing the SDGs in Central Asia.

Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko reiterated Kazakhstan’s commitment to civil society and governance, emphasizing the role of civil society in promoting accountability and sustainable development. Kazakhstan has made significant strides in enhancing human rights protection and implementing political reforms to modernize its political landscape.

The EU’s Global Gateway strategy in Central Asia focuses on innovative, clean, secure digital, energy, and transport links, as well as strengthening health, education, and research systems. The EU Civil Society Facility for Central Asia aims to enhance the capacity of civil society organizations to participate in regional governance and development.

The fifth EU-Central Asia Civil Society Forum serves as a platform for shaping regional policies in digital transformation, climate action, youth participation, and women’s empowerment. Continued collaboration among the EU, UN, and regional partners is essential for strengthening governance, achieving sustainable development, and promoting shared prosperity in Central Asia.
