Proposal to Double Parking Fees in Budapest Areas Sparks Debate

Parking fees in Budapest may see a significant increase in the near future, as seven Hungarian NGOs have proposed a new plan to reshape the city’s parking system. The proposal includes doubling parking fees in certain areas and gradually raising fees for local residents. The NGOs argue that free parking in public spaces is not a basic right and that storing vehicles for free takes away valuable public space.

The organizations believe that implementing their proposals could help reduce traffic congestion in Budapest, make it easier to find parking spots, and create more opportunities for green spaces, pedestrian walkways, and bike lanes. They emphasize that providing free or low-cost parking incentives more car traffic and limits other forms of transportation, such as cycling.

According to the proposal, almost all discounts for parking would be eliminated, and distinctions would be made between households with one or two cars. The plan also suggests that non-residents should pay double the current parking fees and that polluting vehicles would not receive discounts in the future.

Residents could expect to pay between EUR 1,495 and EUR 6,000 per year for parking, depending on the area. Initially, locals would receive a 98% discount, but this discount would decrease gradually. The proposal also aims to double parking fees for vehicles over 2 tonnes.

The revenue generated from the new parking system would be reinvested into improving living conditions for residents. The NGOs are in discussions with local districts and hope that the Budapest City Council will consider and implement their suggestions to create a more efficient and sustainable parking system in the city.
