Proposed Legislation Aims to Toughen Drug Trafficking Laws
The Hungarian government is taking a strong stance against drug use, distribution, and promotion with new proposed amendments to legislation. Fidesz MP László Horváth, the Government Commissioner for the Elimination of Drug Trafficking, introduced a bill to Parliament that includes stricter penalties and measures to combat the spread of drugs in the country.
The proposed amendments aim to completely eradicate drug-related activities and emphasize zero tolerance towards drugs. The government believes that drugs pose a serious threat to public health, safety, and well-being, leading to crimes, accidents, and tragedies. The bill covers various aspects of law enforcement, healthcare, organized crime, and the Criminal Code to address the issue comprehensively.
One of the key measures in the proposed amendments is the ability for police to detain individuals in public places who are in an altered state of consciousness for up to 72 hours. This detention can take place in police custody, sobering-up stations, or healthcare facilities to ensure public safety and order.
Additionally, the bill introduces a new coercive measure called “crime prevention supervision” for individuals involved in drug use or possession. This measure would require reporting and passive cooperation for three months, with the possibility of extension once.
The amendments also tighten the provisions of the Criminal Code by denying parole to repeat offenders convicted of drug trafficking for the second time. Moreover, the bill allows for the confiscation of vehicles, equipment, devices, and properties used in drug trafficking or production.
Furthermore, the proposed legislation includes new penalties for drug users who cooperate with authorities by disclosing the identity of their dealer. Diversion programs would only be available twice, after which stricter criminal liability would apply.
The amendments also address the issue of businesses linked to drug-related offenses. If a business is associated with drug-related crimes at least twice within a year, it could face temporary closure by municipal authorities for six months to one year.
Overall, the Hungarian government is taking decisive action to combat drug trafficking and use in the country with these proposed amendments. The goal is to create a safer and healthier environment for all citizens by cracking down on drug-related activities.
