Protest Held for Akbar, Victim of Gemikonağı Accident

Lefke NGOs Take Action to Raise Awareness on Traffic Accidents

The Lefke region Non-Governmental Organizations Platform recently took action at the site of a tragic accident in Gemikonağı, where a young man named Naveed Akbar lost his life on June 15. The purpose of the action was to draw attention to the prevalence of traffic accidents in both our country and the Lefke region.

During the protest, relatives and friends of Naveed Akbar joined in, displaying banners with messages such as “This is not an accident, but murder”, “my only crime was sitting on the bench”, and “Justice for Naveed”.

Teoman Oktay, Coordinator of the Lefke region Non-Governmental Organizations Platform, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the need for fair legal processes following traffic accidents and expressing concern over the frequency of young people becoming victims of such incidents. Oktay assured that the NGOs in Lefke will continue to advocate for preventative measures and justice in these cases.

Vehit Nekibzade, Chairman of the Lefke Foundation Board of Trustees, highlighted the responsibility of all individuals in our country, particularly in terms of foreign students. He pointed out the lack of necessary infrastructure in the Lefke region, leading to deficiencies in areas such as transportation, security, and healthcare.

Other speakers at the event, including representatives from various associations and organizations in Lefke, called on authorities to address issues such as barriers, speed cameras, police presence, and road safety in the region. The collective message was clear – urgent action is needed to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in Lefke and its surroundings.
