Published: MEB Introduces Sample Measurement Tools for 5th and 9th Grades
The Ministry of National Education in Turkey has announced the availability of sample measurement tools suitable for the Turkey Century Education Model on their website. This new model, which focuses on holistic education and sees students in terms of their mental, social, emotional, affective, physical, and moral aspects, has been implemented this year.
A shift in the measurement and evaluation practices has been made in line with the new curriculum, which includes diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation methods. Teachers are now encouraged to use a variety of evidence such as assignments, projects, performance tasks, student portfolios, presentations, checklists, exams, observation and interview forms, student surveys, role-playing, group work, scales, graduate surveys, in-class discussions, self/peer/group evaluations, and reflection papers to assess and enhance student performance.
The importance of developing and implementing valid, reliable, and useful measurement and evaluation tools that align with the new curriculum’s approach has been emphasized. The tools are required to be suitable for the field and developmental characteristics of the students.
In response to these needs, the Ministry of National Education has published measurement tools suitable for 5th and 9th grade students in the Turkey Century Education Model. These tools take into account the learning outcomes and process components defined in the curriculum, using various approaches to measure them comprehensively.
Included in the tools are worksheets, open-ended questions, performance tasks, and a graded scoring key for evaluating skills. Additionally, self and peer assessment forms have been prepared for students to evaluate themselves and their peers.
These new tools aim to enhance the measurement and evaluation practices in education, providing a more comprehensive and effective way to assess student performance in line with the new holistic approach. Students and teachers are encouraged to make use of these tools to improve the educational experience and outcomes for all.
