Rapid Growth of Solar Capacity

Hungary Sees a Surge in Solar Power Capacity

Hungary has seen a significant increase in solar power capacity in recent years, with around 3,300 megawatts of installed capacity in industrial solar power plants and more than 2,200 megawatts in household solar systems connected to the national grid by the beginning of November this year. This brings the total solar power capacity in the country to over 5,500 megawatts, according to reports from Index.

The Ministry of Energy announced that the capacity growth in the first ten months of this year was approximately 1,500 megawatts, and it is expected to exceed last year’s record by more than one and a half times. This reflects a steady expansion of solar capacity in Hungary, as the country continues to promote the use of green energy.

The government plans to launch the Solar Energy Plus Program in early 2024 to encourage the installation of modern solar panels and storage systems. The program will offer non-refundable support to families through a HUF 75 billion (EUR 199 million) tender. Additionally, domestic companies can apply for funding to improve the flexibility of the electricity system and will be eligible for investment aid and revenue compensation under the HUF 62 billion (EUR 164 milion) call for proposals.

The increased solar power generation has made Hungary a major net exporter of electricity, thanks to favorable weather conditions and the steady expansion of solar capacity. The Hungarian government aims to increase the country’s energy supply from solar energy, reduce energy imports, and rely more on domestic renewable energy sources in the long term.

The development of the solar energy sector is crucial for combating climate change, reinforcing the importance of sustainable energy sources, and serving the country’s economic interests. With the increasing focus on solar power, Hungary is making significant strides towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
