“Rare January Rains Signal Hot Summer Ahead” – BRTK

The Director of the Meteorological Department, Sinan Gunes, has reported that the effects of global climate change are strongly felt in the country, with January of this year being the rainiest month in the last 50 years. Gunes stated that the country experienced a dry year based on three-month evaluations, and that a hot summer is expected. He highlighted that various records were broken in 2024 and that January 2025 saw record-breaking rainfall.
Gunes emphasized the importance of meteorological balloons in weather forecasting, explaining that they collect data on air events, air currents, and meteorological parameters in the upper atmosphere. This data is then sent to the center for analysis, aiding in weather prediction.
The Meteorological Department also operates earthquake monitoring and evaluation centers, collaborating with institutions like Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory. Gunes mentioned the need for meteorological radar in early warning systems, particularly in predicting rainfall amounts and intensities.
Addressing the global climate change crisis, Gunes pointed out that the changing climatic conditions have led to more extreme weather events such as short-term and intense rainfall. He stressed the importance of managing water resources efficiently and planning measures to minimize waste.
In conclusion, Gunes urged citizens to follow weather warnings and take necessary precautions, especially in light of the increasing frequency of dust events in recent years. The Meteorological Department, which operates 24/7 with 70 personnel, aims to provide continuous updates and services to the public. Despite not organizing a specific event for Meteorology Day on March 23 this year, plans are in place to enhance preparations for future events.
