Rare Well-Preserved Military Armour Discovered in Hungarian Town

The Déri Museum in Debrecen, Hungary has made an exciting discovery with the unearthing of a fully armed Pannonian Avar warrior’s tomb on the outskirts of Ebes. The find, made in November 2023, has led to the dismantling and documentation of the armour found in a workshop.

The tomb, which contained a fully armed warrior and a horse buried above him in a shallow grave, has yielded a significant artefact. The most important discovery from the tomb is the complete lamellar armour, which is only the second of its kind to be excavated and is largely intact. This type of armour was a crucial part of the cavalry’s equipment, and the find provides valuable insight into the Pannonian Avar heavy cavalry.

The artefact assemblage, except for the horse bones, was excavated in one block and is currently being dismantled and documented. The warrior, believed to have lived in the early Avar era, has been named Rufus by the archaeologists. The artefacts, including the armour and weapons, are currently visible on the body, but further valuable items may be uncovered as the restoration progresses.

The significance of this discovery is underscored by the fact that the museum’s treasures have been showcased in exhibitions in Austria and Germany in recent years. The custom-made nature of the armours suggests that they may vary in size, shape, and design, making each find a unique and important piece of history.

As the restoration of the artefacts continues, there is hope that more insights into the Pannonian Avar culture and history will be uncovered. The discovery of this tomb is a remarkable addition to the understanding of the Avar warrior culture and will undoubtedly contribute to the knowledge of this fascinating period in history.
