Realizing a Century-long Dream: The Mohács Danube Bridge
The completion of the Mohács Danube Bridge has been a dream over a century in the making, signifying the city’s growth and progress in terms of economy and transportation. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the idea for a permanent bridge was initially proposed but faced numerous setbacks due to historical events. Finally, in 2024, the project gained traction with the Ministry of Construction and Transport spearheading the investment and Duna Aszfalt Ltd. as the contractor, putting an end to over a century of unsuccessful attempts.
The connection between Mohács and the Danube goes back centuries, with temporary bridges constructed for military purposes in the past. The economic development in the 19th century further highlighted the necessity for a fixed crossing, especially with the completion of the Pécs-Mohács railway line and the emergence of fertile lands on the opposite bank. However, issues with the ferry service like congestion during harvest season and traffic disruptions in winter continued to persist.
Efforts for a permanent bridge were reignited in the early 20th century but were repeatedly delayed by World War I, economic crises, and political instability. The lack of a reliable road link impeded regional development for decades, causing dependence on the ferry system which came with its own limitations. The launch of the bridge construction project in 2024 by Danube is not only a step towards infrastructural development but also a historic accomplishment for Mohács, promising economic growth and improved transportation efficiency and safety.
The bridge is expected to be completed by 2028, according to BAMA. This project signifies a turning point for Mohács, reflecting the community’s perseverance and determination to make a long-standing vision a reality. It is a symbol of over a century of persistence finally coming to fruition, allowing for enhanced connectivity and growth in the region.
