Recognizing Family Through Clothing: Embracing Our Bodies

Body Found on Istanbul’s Kadikoy Coast Believed to be Missing Brother
A tragic discovery was made yesterday at noon on the coast of Kadikoy in Istanbul. A person standing by the sea noticed a body in the water and immediately alerted the police. Authorities arrived at the scene and recovered the body from the sea, transporting it to the Forensic Medicine Institute for identification.
The body is believed to belong to Velat Can, one of two brothers who fell into the sea on November 23, 2024, in Sarıyer. The clothing found on the body matches that of Velat Can, but DNA tests and further investigation are still ongoing. Meanwhile, Velat Can’s family anxiously waits for confirmation in front of the Forensic Medicine Institute.
Uncle Tahsim Ulu expressed his hope for closure, stating, “The clothing on the body matches our brother’s. We are awaiting the results of the DNA test. If it is indeed him, at least we will have a sense of closure.” Yüksel Can, Velat’s brother, confirmed the identification based on the clothing and DNA test results, saying, “We are relieved to have found our brother. The clothing and DNA results match.”
The family’s lawyer, Cengiz Kuş, also believes that the body is Velat Can’s based on the clothing. He mentioned that efforts are underway to search for Ayşe, Velat’s sister who is still missing. A private ship from the Navy Command has been deployed for the search. Kuş remains hopeful that Ayşe will be found and identified.
