Record $92.5 Billion in Air Exports

Turkey’s Transportation Sector Sees Rapid Growth in Exports via Air

Turkey has made significant advancements in its transportation infrastructure in recent years, leading to an increase in exports via land, sea, and air. The country has witnessed a rise in the number of rail systems, highways, tunnels, ports, and airports, with the number of active airports growing from 26 to 58 since 2002, including the newly opened Çukurova International Airport.

This growth in the transportation sector has also had a positive impact on export figures, particularly in air transportation. In 2019, Turkey exported $14.8 billion worth of products by air, a number that slightly decreased to $12.7 billion in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, with the implementation of strict measures against the pandemic, exports by air surged to $18.7 billion in 2021, $20.7 billion in 2022, and $25.5 billion in 2023. Over the span of five years, exports via airlines reached a total of $92.5 billion, marking a 71.8 percent increase.

In the first seven months of this year alone, Turkey already exported $14.2 billion worth of products by air, compared to $12.7 billion during the same period last year, indicating a continued growth in this sector.

While exports via air transportation are on the rise, the majority of Turkey’s exports are still carried out by sea. In 2019, out of the $180.8 billion total exports, $109.1 billion were made by sea. This trend continued in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, with the sea route accounting for a significant portion of the country’s total exports.

In the first seven months of this year, out of the $148.7 billion worth of exports, $83.7 billion were conducted via sea transportation. The transportation sector in Turkey is playing a crucial role in boosting the country’s export capabilities and contributing to its overall economic growth.
