Record-Breaking September Rainfall and Temperatures in TRNC
According to the latest data from the Department of Meteorology, September 2024 saw a significant increase in precipitation compared to previous years. The rainfall in September 2024 was measured at 17.6 kilograms per square meter, marking a 167 percent increase compared to the normal levels and a 433 percent increase compared to September 2023. This made September 2024 the fourth rainiest month in the last 49 years in TRNC and the wettest September in the last 15 years.
Additionally, June 14, 2024, was recorded as the hottest day on record in TRNC, with the average temperature reaching 46.6 degrees Celsius. This broke the temperature record since records began in 1975, with the highest temperature recorded at Türkeli Station being 46.8 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead, average temperatures are expected to be slightly higher than normal in October, November, and December, with precipitation levels around normal. However, if La Nina weather conditions prevail in the Pacific Ocean, temperatures may fall 1 to 2 degrees Celsius below normal, and precipitation may be above normal.
Sinan Güneş, the Director of the Meteorology Department, highlighted the record temperatures and rainfall in 2024, attributing them to the effects of global climate change. He emphasized the need for a risk management policy to address extreme weather events and the department’s efforts to provide support in infrastructure and urban planning.
Overall, the data indicates a trend of increasing temperatures and fluctuating precipitation levels in TRNC, signaling the impact of global climate change on the region. It is crucial for authorities to prepare and adapt to these changing weather patterns to mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of the population.
