Record Number of Loggerhead Nests Found on Iztuzu Beach

The number of loggerhead nests on Iztuzu Beach has been on the rise, with a total of 503 nestings recorded since May. This increase is a promising sign for the endangered caretta caretta species of sea turtles that call Iztuzu home.

DEKAMER Project Manager Prof. Dr. Yakup Kaska has attributed this surge in nestings to the well-fed loggerheads that have been laying their eggs in suitable areas. He explained that sea turtles typically reproduce every 2-3 years and can lay around 100 eggs in a single nest. Additionally, they have the capability to build multiple nests at two-week intervals.

“The loggerheads living in Iztuzu are well protected, and their nesting area has grown from 400 last year to 503,” Prof. Dr. Kaska stated. This increase in nestings is a positive development for the conservation efforts of these sea turtles, as it indicates a healthy population and successful reproduction rates.

The preservation of Iztuzu Beach and its loggerhead population is crucial for the continued survival of the caretta caretta species. With ongoing protection measures and monitoring by researchers like Prof. Dr. Kaska, we can hope to see even more record-breaking nestings in the future.
