Regretful Tears: A Haunting Vision Years Later

83-year-old Meryem Hakalmaz, who lost her vision in her left eye years ago and 90 percent of her vision in her right eye four years ago, has regained her eyesight after undergoing surgery. Hakalmaz, who was discharged from Battalgazi State Hospital, expressed her gratitude for being able to see again but was heartbroken by the destruction she witnessed. She prayed for such a tragedy to never happen again.
Meryem Hakalmaz, a mother of four, lost her vision in her left eye years ago and suffered a significant loss in her right eye four years ago. She decided to seek help from Battalgazi State Hospital, where she underwent a thorough examination. The medical professionals determined that surgery was necessary to correct her vision. On September 18, Dr. Özge Sarıtaş performed the operation on Hakalmaz’s right eye. After the surgery, her vision in the right eye was completely restored, while her left eye still requires ongoing treatment. She was discharged from the hospital with improved eyesight.
Following her surgery, Meryem Hakalmaz shared her experience of losing her vision during the earthquake disaster. She expressed her gratitude for being able to see the world again, but also the devastation caused by the earthquake. She called upon God to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, emphasizing the pain it brings to the Muslim community and the entire nation. She also mentioned her previous loss of vision in her left eye and the gradual deterioration of her right eye. Witnessing the wreckage broke her heart, and she wished she had not seen it. However, she remained hopeful and thankful and prayed for protection from such incidents in the future.
Meryem Hakalmaz’s daughter, Fatma Özer, explained how deeply her mother was affected by seeing the destruction caused by the earthquake. Tears streamed down her mother’s face as she witnessed the devastation. The family constantly discusses the earthquake since they have experienced it firsthand. They believe that seeing the devastation with their own eyes has made a lasting impact and removed the need for explanations.
Dr. Özge Sarıtaş, the ophthalmologist who performed the surgery on Meryem Hakalmaz, highlighted the importance of routine eye check-ups. Sarıtaş explained that cataracts, which cause vision loss due to the opacity of the eye lens, can be detected during regular examinations. In Meryem’s case, her cataract had worsened because she delayed seeking treatment. However, the successful surgery improved her vision significantly. Sarıtaş advised patients not to wait too long for surgery, as it can increase the risks and prolong the healing process. Regular eye examinations are crucial, particularly for older patients who may not notice changes in their vision.
In conclusion, Meryem Hakalmaz’s successful eye surgery has restored her vision, allowing her to see the world once again. However, the devastation caused by the recent earthquake has left her heartbroken. She, along with her family, hopes that such unfortunate events will never happen again. The importance of routine eye check-ups and timely treatment for conditions like cataracts was also emphasized by the doctors involved in Hakalmaz’s treatment.
