BORD Architectural Studio Plans to Renew and Rebuild Iconic Ferry Terminals at Lake Balaton
The BORD Architectural Studio has announced plans to renew and rebuild the ferry terminals of Szántód and Tihany, the popular destination of Lake Balaton’s ferry route connecting the Northern and Southern banks of the “Hungarian Sea.” The new ferry terminal in Szántód will resemble the original hyperbolic paraboloid reinforced concrete shell structure built in the 1960s, promising to preserve its iconic design.
According to the architectural studio, the reconstruction of the ferry terminals will be one of their most exciting projects in 2025. The restoration of the passenger waiting area in Szántód will focus on highlighting the unique structure of the hyperbolic paraboloid reinforced concrete shell. The studio aims to make this structure a prominent feature of the Szántód port.
Their concept for the Szántód port includes a new elevated walkway that will offer stunning views of the water, reeds, and the entire port, leading visitors out to the pier. The necessary service functions will be housed in a new L-shaped building, creating a subtle boundary between the port and the reed beds.
In addition to the Szántód terminal, the Tihany ferry terminal will also undergo renewal. The studio plans to preserve existing historic buildings and highlight the surrounding natural landscape. The new service building will be positioned behind a small stone-clad maritine building from the 1930s, blending seamlessly with the Balaton shoreline.
While the restoration of the iconic Körpresszó (Circle Café) building in Tihany is not part of the current project, the passenger waiting area will be incorporated into the new building, offering spectacular views of Lake Balaton, the ferry port, and the adjacent park.
