Reporters Critique Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s Election Statements on CNN TÜRK

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), has stated that he has no regrets about the outcome of the recent elections. “Everything was right from my point of view. We believed we would win, but it was not what we expected,” he said in a television program. Kılıçdaroğlu also reiterated the party’s call for a convention to be held before the local elections and left the authority to party members for selecting the general presidency.
The CHP leader also commented on Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has called for change after the elections. Kılıçdaroğlu stated that Istanbul is important, and the call for change is a welcome one. The CHP leader also added that he knows very well what the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality should look like and that Istanbul should be governed by a Republican People’s Party member.
However, some journalists have expressed their disagreement with Kılıçdaroğlu’s comments. Hürriyet newspaper writer Abdulkadir Selvi said that he doesn’t agree with Kılıçdaroğlu’s statements about success. He added that if Kılıçdaroğlu had been a consistent leader, he should have resigned on Election Night. Milliyet newspaper writer Özay Şendir also criticized Kılıçdaroğlu’s focus on the last 5-10 years, saying that the CHP has values that go beyond recent history.
The recent elections have raised many questions regarding the future of the CHP and their strategies. The party’s call for a convention and support for change may signal a renewed focus on principles and values as opposed to solely winning elections.
