Residents in Zonguldak wear masks as factory odor lingers

Residents of Bölücek District Protest Foul Odor Emanating from Recycling Factory

Local residents in Bölücek District have gathered in front of a recycling facility to protest the foul odor spreading into the environment. The waste brought from outside the city to the factory has resulted in an unpleasant smell that has been bothering residents for a while.

A large number of gendarmerie and Karadeniz Ereğli Municipality police team were called to the scene to address the situation. Despite the residents’ complaints about the smell, they were not allowed to enter the factory premises.

Karadeniz Ereğli Deputy Mayor Gökhan Günay also visited the factory to investigate the source of the odor. Teams from the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change took samples of the materials being processed at the factory.

Due to the congestion in front of the facility, traffic flow on the route was managed by the gendarmerie teams. Günay mentioned that the iron pile classified as hazardous waste from the Izmit region was found in the factory, emitting a strange smell.

“We will not allow anyone to be poisoned,” Günay said, emphasizing that the municipality will take necessary actions and impose the heaviest legal sanctions on the company responsible for the odor issue. Samples are being taken for further investigation to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in the area.
