President Ersin Tatar Advocates for Respect of Faith and Democracy in Clothing Changes
In a recent statement, President Ersin Tatar emphasized the importance of respecting everyone’s faith within the framework of democracy. He addressed the issue of changing clothing in schools and expressed concerns about the politicization of the statutes related to school uniforms in secondary and high schools.
President Tatar criticized the attempts to move the discussion on clothing changes to a political sphere, stating that it deviates from the principle of secularism. He emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people have always followed Atatürk’s principles and revolutions, and any changes to the statutes should not alter this situation.
Highlighting the need for adjustments in laws and regulations to align with universal human rights, children’s rights, and other rights, President Tatar pointed out that protecting people’s rights and freedoms is essential. He defended the equal opportunity and right to education while underlining the importance of maintaining order in schools through a uniform policy that respects freedom of belief.
President Tatar reaffirmed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a democratic state of law that upholds freedom of expression and action as fundamental rights. He emphasized the need to respect individuals’ religious beliefs and called for a tolerant and democratic approach to such sensitive issues.
President Tatar urged all parties to refrain from deepening polarizations through unnecessary debates and instead focus on improving the education system. He emphasized the importance of mature and respectful behavior in discussing controversial topics, ensuring a harmonious and inclusive society in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
