Restoration of Buda Castle’s Magnificent Palace and Dome Captured in Stunning Photos

The former Honvéd Főparancsnokság building, which served as the headquarters of the Hungarian Defence Forces, is undergoing reconstruction in the Buda Castle. Once completed, it will be home to one of the most captivating institutions in Hungary.

The National Hauszmann Program’s official Facebook page has announced that the rebuilt headquarters will house the renowned Hungarian Institute and Museum of Military History. Additionally, a new visitor’s center for the Buda Castle district will also be established within the renovated building. The Military History Museum will relocate from its current location at Kapisztrán Square to the new facility, which will offer 2,500 square meters of space to showcase the valor of the Hungarian military.

The former defence forces headquarters at Buda Castle’s Dísz Square sustained significant damage during the Soviet siege of Budapest but was not completely destroyed. Despite being salvageable, the Communist leadership chose not to restore the building, opting instead to dismantle it down to its first floor. The former Ministry of Defence, located behind the headquarters prior to World War II, was also demolished.

The new building will feature the largest and most ornate dome in the Buda Castle, with accessibility for all visitors and a viewing platform inside. The restoration project is a significant step towards preserving Hungary’s military history and providing a new and engaging attraction for both locals and tourists.
