Retiring in Spain: A Haven for Hungarian Pensioners?

The trend of Hungarian pensioners relocating to Spain is on the rise, with many individuals finding the Mediterranean climate and lifestyle appealing. In 2024, the average pension in Hungary was EUR 588, while the median pension barely reached EUR 520. However, there are significant differences among pensioners, with over 24,000 receiving over EUR 1,500 monthly.

One such pensioner, Rozi Pusztai, shared her experience with I Love You Hungary, explaining that she and her partner moved to the Valencia-Murcia region after carefully considering their options. They sold everything in Hungary and bought a two-storey house in La Marina, renting out the lower floor to tourists for extra income.

Pusztai highlighted that the cost of living in Spain is lower than in Hungary, with expenses such as taxes, car maintenance, electricity, and internet not exceeding EUR 250-300. They spend a maximum of EUR 1,000 on daily expenses, enjoying fresh produce from local markets and regular trips.

Despite the language barrier, Pusztai mentioned that the locals in Spain are always smiling and cooperative. She emphasized the sense of community and the lively atmosphere by the sea, stating that there is always a party, music, or dancing to enjoy.

Mrs. Pusztai noted that she does not wish to return to Hungary permanently and feels content arranging her healthcare in Spain. She advised that active workers may find it challenging to secure employment in Spain, suggesting that pensioners, digital nomads, or business owners consider relocating to the country.

As the number of Hungarian pensioners moving to Spain increases, could Spain become the new Promised Land for retirees looking for a peaceful and vibrant lifestyle? Only time will tell.
