Revamp of Budapest’s Historic Tram Line 2 in World Heritage Site
The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced plans to upgrade tram line 2, a iconic route along the Danube. The project will focus on the stretch between the Elisabeth Bridge and the Chain Bridge, with the goal of enhancing accessibility while preserving the area’s UNESCO World Heritage Site status. By late 2026, modern low-floor CAF trams will operate along the route, providing a more inclusive experience for passengers.
Key infrastructure upgrades planned by BKK include reconstructing the viaduct beneath Vigadó Square, renovating tram tracks, and upgrading platforms at the Eötvös Square stop to accommodate low-floor trams. Tactile paving will also be installed to assist visually impaired passengers. Additionally, retaining walls, historic railings, and lampposts will be repaired, pedestrian staircases widened, and lighting and drainage systems modernized while adhering to heritage conservation standards.
Funded by the European Union, the tram line 2 overhaul project is currently in the procurement process, with construction potentially starting in 2025. The initiative highlights Budapest’s commitment to modernizing public transport infrastructure and promoting inclusivity for all residents and visitors.
While full accessibility improvements at Vigadó Square are limited, enhancements at the Eötvös Square stop will provide a more accessible link to the Danube Promenade’s pedestrian zone. Future plans for Budapest’s tram network include introducing 51 new low-floor CAF trams by 2030, along with a separate tender for over 100 new trams to replace older vehicles and improve accessibility across more routes.
These efforts align with Budapest’s larger strategy to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and livable city while preserving its cultural heritage. Through these upgrades, tram line 2 will continue to serve as a vital and picturesque mode of transport for both locals and tourists.
