Reviving a 25-Year-Old Idle Theatre Building: BRTK’s Return to the Art World

Fikri Ataoğlu, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, recently visited the Turkish Cypriot State Theatre building to inspect the ongoing works for the second phase of construction. During his visit, Ataoğlu was accompanied by various officials from the Ministry and State Theaters, who briefed him on the progress of the project.

The State Theatre building, which was destroyed by a fire in 1999, has undergone many changes over the years but could never be realized. Ataoğlu emphasized the importance of completing the project as soon as possible to meet the expectations of artists and art lovers who have been waiting for this cultural hub for years.

Highlighting the significance of art and theater in society, Ataoğlu expressed his desire to have a contemporary theatre building that would serve the Cypriot people and artists. He mentioned that the completion of the construction and the opening of the State Theatre would create a platform for art, artists, and audiences to come together.

After assessing the progress of the ongoing works, Ataoğlu mentioned that any deficiencies would be addressed through a tender for the third stage of construction. He assured that the building would soon be ready for artistic performances after a long wait of 25 years.

Ataoğlu also acknowledged the support of the Turkish State Theatres in eliminating any technical deficiencies in the building and expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the project. He hoped that the State Theatre building would benefit theatre artists and the people of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Overall, the completion of the Turkish Cypriot State Theatre building is eagerly anticipated by the community, as it will provide a much-needed space for the promotion of culture and arts in the region.
