Reviving Aport Apples: Scientists Share Potential Solutions

ASTANA – The National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan recently organized a Garden Day dedicated to Almaty Aport, a unique type of apple, and discussed measures to preserve this special variety. The event was attended by Kazakh Deputy Minister of Agriculture Yerbol Taszhurekov, Deputy Akim (Mayor) of the Almaty Region Nurzhan Kudaibergenov, heads of research institutes, representatives of agribusiness, scientists from Turkey, Poland, and Bulgaria.

Kazakhstan is famous as the birthplace of apples, with Almaty Aport being known for its sour-sweet taste, unforgettable smell, and juiciness. Last year, Almaty Aport was officially registered in the State Register of Geographic Indications, highlighting its significance.

During the event, President of the National Academy of Sciences Akhylbek Kurishbayev announced that mother seedlings of the Aport Almaty and Aport Bloody Red varieties were planted on five hectares. These seedlings were carefully selected from 115 clones of Aport based on taste and disease resistance. Genetic analysis was also conducted to identify varieties of wild Sievers apple that are compatible with Aport, leading to the establishment of a seed orchard. In 2023, Kazakhstan produced nearly 251,500 tons of apples.

Participants at the event discussed future plans and prospects for the horticulture industry, with a special focus on the revival and preservation of the Aport variety. The efforts to preserve this unique apple variety reflect Kazakhstan’s commitment to preserving its rich agricultural heritage.
