Reviving the Aport Apple: Gardeners Take the Lead in Bringing Back Kazakhstan’s Favorite Fruit
Private gardeners and associations in Kazakhstan are working tirelessly to bring back the beloved aport apple to tables across the country and beyond. The aport apple, known for its rich red color and vibrant flavor, was once a common sight in the mountainous regions near Almaty. However, with urbanization, only a few orchards remain, putting this national treasure at risk.
Saule Kazybayeva, deputy chair of the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Fruit Growing and Viticulture, highlighted that the aport variety spread rapidly across southeastern Kazakhstan, particularly in the mountainous regions of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. Efforts from the Vernyi Horticultural School and private orchard owners have helped in preserving this unique apple variety.
Despite the challenges of growing aport apples, local gardeners and associations are determined to revive this special fruit. Roman Safarov, president of the Almaty Aport Producers Association, emphasized the remarkable size and distinct aroma of the aport apple. Growing an aport tree is a labor-intensive task, but enthusiasts are starting to see results.
The government has also taken steps to support the revival of the aport apple. The Ministry of Agriculture and the National Agrarian Scientific and Educational Center have developed a program to green 110 hectares of land from 2024 to 2028. Private investors and nursery farms are involved in this initiative to expand aport apple cultivation.
With private gardeners and associations working alongside government initiatives, there is hope for the resurgence of the aport apple in Kazakhstan. By preserving this national treasure, they aim to bring back the rich heritage and vibrant flavors of this legendary fruit to tables across the country and beyond.
