Rising Prices in Hungarian Baths: What’s Behind the Surge?

Hungary to see further price rises for spa and bath tickets

Visiting spas and baths in Hungary has become more and more expensive, and it seems that the trend is set to continue. According to insider sources, increased water and sewerage charges are going to drive forthcoming price hikes in May and June. This could mean a 10-15% increase in ticket prices for most spas across the country.

Earlier this year, it was reported that entrance fees to spas and baths in Hungary had already soared by 5-6%, making it difficult to find a bath experience for under HUF 10,000 (EUR 25.7). The impending surge in water and sewerage charges is expected to add to these costs, with spas facing tens of millions of forints in additional expenses. This means that ticket prices will have to rise in order to cover these extra costs.

Zoltán Balogh, the secretary general of the Hungarian Bathing Association, highlighted the impact of the increased charges, stating that the hike in water and sewerage charges could mean an additional expenditure of around HUF 10 million annually for small to medium-sized spas, and over HUF 100 million for larger establishments. As a result, operators have no choice but to raise ticket prices.

The Hungarian Water Utility Association defended the fee adjustments, stating that these charges have remained stagnant for 12 years and have not factored in inflation. However, they believe that these adjustments are necessary to maintain service quality.

Despite the impending price hikes, the Hungarian Bathing Association is hopeful that the rate of price escalation won’t dent turnover. They are also prepared to terminate contracts during off-peak periods in order to trim expenses and safeguard finances.

It seems that enjoying a relaxing bath in Hungary is going to come at an even higher cost in the near future. If you’re planning a trip to a Hungarian spa or bath, it might be wise to budget for these impending price rises.
