Road Closures in Istanbul on May Day

Turkey Prepares for May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day with Road Closures

As May 1 approaches, Turkey is preparing for Labor and Solidarity Day by closing roads and erecting barriers in and around Taksim Square. Gezi Park has also been closed off with barriers.

Even though some barriers remain in place, on the morning of May 1, Taksim Square and its surrounding roads will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The Traffic Inspection Branch of the Istanbul Police Department released a statement announcing the specific roads that will be closed to traffic as of 6:00 am on May 1.

The list of roads to be closed includes key areas such as Kumbaracı Hill, Asmalı Mescit Street, and Meşrutiyet Street. Vehicle drivers have been advised to use alternative routes such as Refik Saydam Street, Tarlabaşı Boulevard, and Defterdar Hill.

In Maltepe, the area between Turgut Özal Boulevard, Küçükyalı Maltepe Marriage Office, and Kartal Çanakkale Street Junction, as well as all streets leading to this street, will be closed to traffic. The D-100 highway and Maltepe Bağdat Caddesi will be available as alternative routes for drivers who usually use these roads.

Due to the road closures, commuters and visitors should expect delays and are encouraged to plan accordingly. Despite the disruption, the day promises to be one of solidarity and remembrance for workers all over Turkey.
