UN Secretary-General António Guterres Praises Kazakhstan’s Role in Global Security and Peace
During a meeting with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana on July 3, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted Kazakhstan’s significant contribution to ensuring global security and peace. Guterres commended Kazakhstan for its consistent efforts in promoting peace and serving as a mediator in difficult circumstances.
Guterres expressed his appreciation for Kazakhstan’s leadership in nuclear disarmament and its commitment to peacekeeping initiatives, such as the Astana Process on Syria. He described Kazakhstan as a “bridge builder” and a “messenger of peace” with substantial moral authority in the international community.
President Tokayev welcomed Guterres’s visit as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN. He reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s full support for the UN’s activities, particularly in the current challenging global environment.
The discussions between Guterres and Tokayev also focused on enhancing regional cooperation in Central Asia, priority areas of collaboration between Kazakhstan and the UN, and the broader international agenda. Guterres praised the region’s economic integration processes and emphasized its potential in addressing global issues.
In addition to the meeting in Astana, Guterres visited the UN Plaza building in Almaty, where he met with UN officials, including the UN Resident Coordinator for Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan’s efforts in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development goals were acknowledged by Guterres during the visit.
The establishment of the UN Regional Centre for SDGs for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty was highlighted as a significant initiative to promote peace and security in the region. The UN Plaza building in Almaty, which houses 18 UN agencies, serves as a testament to Kazakhstan’s commitment to international cooperation and peace.
Kazakhstan’s accession to the UN in 1992 was recognized as an important milestone in the country’s international recognition of sovereignty and independence. President Tokayev’s reaffirmation of Kazakhstan’s support for the UN agenda further underlines the country’s dedication to advancing global peace and security.
