The Ministry Issues a Statement Regarding the Legal Process of Rümeysa Öztürk
A recent statement from the Ministry highlighted that Rümeysa Öztürk has been under close monitoring ever since the beginning of the legal process. Öztürk was described as a symbolic figure in a legal case that arose from developments in US domestic policy, involving thousands of foreign students. The Ministry confirmed that the proceedings were conducted in accordance with the wishes of Öztürk and her family.
Consulate support was extended to Öztürk amidst her challenging situation abroad. The Consul General of Houston paid multiple visits to Louisiana, while the Consul General of Boston held online meetings with Öztürk to discuss her case.
The Ministry debunked any misleading claims about Öztürk, emphasizing that there are two separate legal processes concerning her. The aim is to provide clarity to the public regarding the situation of citizens involved in politics.
The first legal process pertains to an ongoing immigration case in Louisiana, where Öztürk’s visa was revoked by US authorities. The second process involves an objection to Öztürk’s detention, which was heard in Vermont on April 14. The court ruled in favor of transferring Öztürk to Vermont by May 1.
Rümeysa Öztürk, a PhD student at Tufts University, was detained by Ice officials on March 25 and subsequently transported to a detention center in Louisiana. A regional judge in Massachusetts intervened to halt Öztürk’s deportation, citing concerns over the transfer of the student from Vermont to Louisiana.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the cancelation of Öztürk’s student visa and her impending deportation. The Ministry continues to provide support to Öztürk and her family throughout the legal proceedings.
