Russia and Ukraine coordinate prisoner exchange; Zelenskiy vows to remember all detainees
A successful prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia was recently facilitated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy announced that 189 Ukrainians were safely returned home, expressing his relief and gratitude for their release. He praised the efforts of the negotiation team and acknowledged the crucial role played by the UAE in this process.
The exchange, however, was not without controversy, as the Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement contradicting Zelenskiy’s account. According to the Ministry, the exchange involved 150 Russian soldiers being returned from Ukrainian territory, in exchange for 150 Ukrainian soldiers being handed over to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Russian soldiers were transferred to Belarus for rehabilitation and health checks.
This prisoner exchange marks a rare moment of cooperation between Ukraine and Russia, amidst ongoing tensions between the two countries. The involvement of the UAE as a mediator highlights the importance of international diplomacy in resolving conflicts and securing the safe return of individuals held captive.
