Russia and USA Trade Blame at UN Security Council Over Ukraine Conflict
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) recently met to discuss arms transfers to Ukraine at the request of Russia. The meeting saw strong statements from various representatives, highlighting the complexities and challenges surrounding the Ukrainian crisis.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the West of obstructing a peaceful resolution in Ukraine by supporting Kiev. He also claimed that the USA’s support for Ukraine amounted to a declaration of war against Russia and an attempt to weaken Europe economically. He emphasized that negotiations should be started urgently and warned that continued conflict will only cause more civilian casualties.
China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Zhang Jung, expressed concern about the situation in Ukraine, stating that it was turning into a protracted conflict. He stressed the importance of working to end the crisis and focusing on common security. Jung also cautioned against NATO’s eastward expansion, pointing out that it would deepen the security and trust gap.
On the other hand, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Robert Wood, criticized Russia’s request for a meeting about arms transfers to Ukraine, accusing Russia of using the Council as a stage for its disinformation campaign. He also highlighted the presence of Russian soldiers on Ukrainian territory and accused Russia of violating UNSC resolutions by purchasing weapons from Iran and North Korea.
UN Permanent Representative Sergiy Kyslytsy addressed Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov’s exit from the session, noting that the statements made at the UNSC would serve as evidence in future courts dealing with war crimes. He also quoted Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev’s statement, which he interpreted as revealing genocidal intent towards Ukraine.
UN Deputy Director of Disarmament Adedeji Ebo stressed the importance of arms transfers occurring within the international legal framework and called for all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure to be stopped immediately.
