Sirens Wail and Explosions Heard as Ukraine is Attacked by Russia
On the 12th of October, a devastating series of attacks were carried out on Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, by Russia. Explosions rang out across the city, accompanied by the wail of sirens as Ukrainian authorities tried to evacuate citizens and warn them to stay away from windows.
Kyiv Mayor, Vitali Klitscho, announced that rocket fragments fell in central areas of the city, including the zoo. While there were injuries as a result of the attacks, it is unclear whether anyone was killed. An official stated that the attacks, which used drones and missiles, were of “extraordinary intensity.”
This is not the first time that Russia has launched attacks on Ukraine. The ongoing conflict between the two countries has been raging since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Since then, Russia has supported separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, leading to a deadly conflict that has killed around 14,000 people.
The international community has condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine and called for an end to the violence. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called an emergency meeting of his national security council to discuss the situation, and has vowed to defend his country’s sovereignty.
