Germany and Poland Strengthen Ties Amid Security Concerns
In a significant diplomatic move, German politician Friedrich Merz made his first visit to France following his meetings with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw. At a joint press conference, Merz addressed Germany’s historical responsibilities and the ongoing security challenges posed by Russia.
Emphasizing the heavy burden of guilt stemming from Germany’s occupation of Poland during World War II, Merz stated, “This sense of guilt arising from the great responsibility of us, we are still taking it seriously and accept.” He described the catastrophic impact of the occupation, particularly the devastation of Warsaw, and expressed Germany’s commitment to remembering the millions who lost their lives during that period. Merz announced plans to establish a permanent memorial in Germany to honor the victims.
Russia’s continued aggression was a central theme in Merz’s remarks. “Russia continues to be the biggest threat to our security,” he noted, highlighting the implications for European-Atlantic relations. Given Poland’s geographical proximity to Russia and Belarus, Merz acknowledged the heightened sensitivity of the region and emphasized the strong solidarity between Germany and Poland in facing these challenges.
Merz also addressed the need for enhanced deterrence and collective defense capabilities, pointing out Poland’s significant contributions to NATO’s eastern flank. He outlined Germany’s commitment to increasing defense spending, citing a recent constitutional amendment that allows for necessary military expenditures.
The cooperation between Germany and Poland extends to support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict, with both countries actively engaging in political, military, and refugee strategies. Merz expressed a desire to collaborate further on European migration and asylum policies, advocating for unified rules and effective border control measures.
However, Prime Minister Tusk raised concerns regarding Merz’s proposals for tightening border controls, arguing that such measures would place an additional burden on Poland as it already ensures the EU’s external border security. Tusk stated, “If someone applies controls on the Polish border, Poland will implement such controls, and this is not logical in the long run.”
As both nations navigate these complex issues, their partnership appears poised to strengthen amidst shared challenges and a commitment to historical acknowledgment.
