Samarkand Hosts World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has reported that the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships will be taking place in Samarkand from Dec. 26-30. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed gratitude to Uzbekistan for hosting the event and emphasized FIDE’s objective to organize more global chess events, providing enthusiasts worldwide the chance to witness their heroes in action. The tournament will feature an impressive lineup of renowned players, including Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, Ju Wenjun, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Mariya Muzychuk, Tan Zhongyi, Antoaneta Stefanova, and others. The prize fund totals $1 million. Reigning two-time Women’s World Blitz Chess Champion Bibisara Assaubayeva is among the favorites in the championship and is expected to perform well. Last year, Assaubayeva won the 2022 FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship, which took place in Almaty. The event is expected to draw global attention and excitement, with the best players in the world competing for the coveted titles in rapid and blitz chess. All eyes will be on Samarkand as the chess world comes together for an exhilarating competition.
