Saving Caspian Seals: Kazakhstan’s Conservation Journey
The Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology in Astana has recently unveiled a new documentary titled “On the Shoals of the Caspian Sea, the Call of the Seals.” The film showcases the dedicated work of researchers as they navigate the challenges of studying Caspian seals, including conducting aerial surveys and analyzing data for conservation efforts.
The documentary not only captures the behavior of the seals but also sheds light on the passion and perseverance of the researchers committed to protecting them. Assel Baimukanova, a researcher at the institute, spoke to The Astana Times about the film and the importance of conservation efforts in the face of environmental changes affecting Caspian seals.
The Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology, based in Almaty, has been at the forefront of Caspian seal research, conducting extensive studies on population dynamics, age distribution, and diet to contribute to the species’ protection and restoration. Climate change and human impact pose significant risks to Caspian seals, with warmer winters affecting breeding habitats and pollution accumulating in the shrinking sea. Baimukanova emphasized the urgent need for conservation efforts, including the establishment of a state nature reserve and the implementation of an action plan based on years of research to ensure the survival of the species.
