
Saving Turkish Cypriots: The Baykal Tunnel Documentary – BRTK

A new documentary film about the Baykal Tunnel, which played a crucial role in the history of the Turkish Cypriot people, has been recently unveiled. The tunnel, excavated between 1966-1967 and serving as a path to salvation for Turkish Cypriots in 1974, is the focal point of this cinematic work.
The premiere of the documentary, made possible through the support of Gazimagusa Municipality, took place at the historic Bandabuliya building. Famagusta Mayor Süleyman Uluçay highlighted the significance of the Baykal Tunnel in illuminating the recent history of Turkish Cypriots in his address during the premiere event.
Architect and engineer of the Baykal Tunnel, Osman Saner, expressed his joy for having contributed to the construction of the tunnel, which ultimately saved many lives in Baykal. The directors of the documentary, Mehmet Ali Yurdaer and Şengül Musaoğulları, stated their mission to preserve history for future generations through their film.
Following the speeches, the audience had the opportunity to witness the documentary for the first time, shedding light on the remarkable story of the Baykal Tunnel and its role in the lives of Turkish Cypriots.
