Cargo Ship “Kafkametler” Sinks Near Ereğli Port, Search for Missing Crew Continues
A tragic incident occurred on November 19, 2023, when the cargo ship “Kafkametler” sank near Ereğli Port after hitting a military breakwater. The ship was on its way from Russia’s Temruk Port to Aliağa Port when it was diverted to Kdz due to bad weather conditions.
Out of the 12 Turkish crew members on board, the bodies of 5 have been recovered during the search and rescue efforts, which have been ongoing for five days. The search for the remaining 7 crew members is still ongoing, with no tangible leads yet.
The Zonguldak Governorship has provided details of the ongoing search efforts. A ship salvage and wreck removal company has been conducting scans of the wreck site and bottom of the sea in search of the missing crew members. After dividing the ship into two and conducting thorough investigations with divers, only a refrigerator has been recovered from the debris.
