Semmelweis University Triumphs over European Council in Battle

Semmelweis University, along with several other universities, has taken legal action against the Council of the EU and now their case has been accepted by the EU Court of Justice. The reason for this legal battle stems from the fact that the Council has suspended 55 percent of payments for three operational programs in Hungary and has also prohibited them from entering into contracts with the EU, citing conflict of interest rules for public interest trusts.

In an interview with People’s Word, Béla Merkely, the rector of Semmelweis University, expressed his confusion over the situation, stating that it is strange that the university was excluded from the program for being run by a foundation when a significant number of universities in Europe are also run by foundations. Despite having no politicians on the board of trustees, the university has faced significant financial losses due to the Council’s decisions.

Merkely emphasized that the university has been unfairly affected by the Council’s actions, missing out on over EUR 10 million in funding for various EU projects. The rector has been actively advocating for the university’s case, reaching out to MEPs and EU experts to assert the university’s credibility and integrity.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Semmelweis University has ambitious plans for institutional development up to 2030, focusing on expanding educational opportunities for both Hungarian and international students. Merkely highlighted the university’s commitment to providing top-tier education and attracting the best students globally.

As the legal proceedings continue, Merkely remains hopeful for a fair resolution, expecting that a deal may be offered before the end of the trial. He anticipates that the European institutions will work towards finding a solution post the EU elections, emphasizing the importance of resolving the conflict and restoring funding for the university’s crucial projects.
