Serik Zhumangarin named Kazakhstan’s Minister of National Economy

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made a significant appointment on Dec. 21, naming Serik Zhumangarin as the new Minister of National Economy, as reported by Akorda. Zhumangarin, who has been serving as Deputy Prime Minister since 2022, will now take on this additional role in the government.

The decision to appoint Zhumangarin came after the dismissal of Nurlan Baibazarov, who held the position for less than a year. Zhumangarin, 55, hails from the Aktobe Region and has a background in the oil industry. He graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute with a degree in thermal physics before transitioning to public service in 2005.

Over the years, Zhumangarin has held various roles within the government, including Vice Minister of National Economy in 2017 and Chairman of the Kazakhstan Agency for the Protection and Development of Competition in 2020. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Integration until September 2023.

Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov highlighted the importance of dynamic economic growth and structural changes in introducing Zhumangarin as the new Minister of National Economy. The focus will be on implementing effective budget and tax policies, as well as improving budget forecasting to drive the country’s economic development forward.
