Slick spotted on Beykoz coast

Residents of Beykoz, a coastal town in Istanbul, are facing a serious issue as mucilage has intensified at the bottom of the sea and surfaced in the past few days. Beykoz Fisheries Cooperative President Zeki Demirtas expressed the challenges that fishermen are currently dealing with due to this mucilage outbreak. He mentioned that fishermen have been affected for two and a half months, making it difficult for them to catch fish as the nets disintegrate under the influence of the mucilage.
According to Demirtas, all fishermen in the Bosphorus are suffering from this issue, with no relief in sight. Esat Demirkaya, the owner of a boat in the fishing shelter, also reported that they have just started to see mucilage on the shore, making it impossible to set their nets as there is a layer of mud under the sea.
The pollution caused by mucilage is not only affecting the livelihood of fishermen but also impacting the overall marine ecosystem. Ibrahim Etemiz, a local resident, highlighted the damage the mucilage is causing to marine life and called for immediate biological treatment to address the issue.
In addition to Beykoz, similar pollution has been observed on the coastline of Moda in Kadıköy, indicating a widespread problem that requires urgent attention. The presence of mucilage not only affects the fishing industry but also raises concerns about the health of the sea and its inhabitants. Efforts must be made to address this environmental issue and prevent further damage to the marine ecosystem in these areas.
