Slovakia Emulates Hungary’s Constitutional Amendment: Man and Woman – Following the Trend

Slovak Government Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Recognize Two Biological Sexes and Ensure Gender Equality
The Slovak government has taken a significant step towards amending the constitution to recognize two biological sexes: male and female. This proposal also includes a provision to guarantee equality between men and women in terms of pay for work, as reported by ma7.sk.
Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) submitted the proposal to the government, emphasizing the importance of protecting traditional values to preserve Slovakia’s cultural heritage and maintain legal stability. The proposed constitutional amendment aims to reinforce the protection of cultural heritage and acknowledges marriage between a man and a woman as a unique institution.
According to the proposal, Slovakia’s sovereignty in fundamental cultural and ethical matters, such as the protection of life, human dignity, private and family life, marriage, parenthood, language, and culture, is paramount. The amendment also addresses health, education, and training, extending family and social legislation to emphasize the institution of the family and parental rights.
Furthermore, the proposal broadens the constitutional definition of parental rights and specifies the individuals eligible to adopt minor children. It also highlights the right of parents to make decisions regarding their children’s education beyond the state education program.
The amendment would require the state education program to align with the constitution, ensuring consistency in educational practices. Despite some opposition, with 40 MPs against and 22 abstaining, 81 MPs supported the proposal during the second reading.
Notably, opposition politicians Anna Záborská and Richard Vašečka of the Christian Union party also backed the proposal, citing the importance of safeguarding Slovakia’s sovereignty, marriage, family, children, and life over political considerations.
This move by the Slovak government mirrors similar efforts in Hungary, where the Fidesz party submitted an amendment to the Fundamental Law addressing biological sexes. The Hungarian proposal reinforces the binary classification of sexes as male or female and underscores all children’s right to protection and care for their physical, mental, and moral development.
The proposed constitutional amendments in both Slovakia and Hungary reflect a broader trend in Central European countries to prioritize traditional values and cultural heritage in legislative reforms.
