“Slovakia’s Prime Minister Eduard Heger Steps Down”
Slovakia’s political crisis continues as Prime Minister Eduard Heger resigns ahead of the early general elections scheduled for September. Heger stated that he wanted to provide space for the President to remove his authority and lead Slovakia towards democratic parliamentary elections with a technocratic government that would be stable and peaceful.
Following Heger’s resignation, Slovak President Zuzana Caputova appointed Ludovit Odor as the new Prime Minister to lead the country’s technocratic government. Odor, who is the 46-year-old Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of Slovakia, will determine the rest of his government after May 15.
Last year in September, the liberal Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS) withdrew from the coalition government, dissatisfied with the government’s handling of the crisis. One of the main reasons for the SaS’s dissatisfaction was the rising energy and food prices, which were exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine War.
The Heger government ultimately fell in December 2022 after a crack in the coalition led to a vote of no confidence. President Caputova then appointed Heger as the interim prime minister until the upcoming elections.
As Slovakia continues to navigate its political crisis, many are hopeful that the appointment of a technocratic government will lead to stability and peace ahead of the September elections.
