Snowfall in Istanbul Blankets North Marmara Motorway, Drivers Struggle to Navigate
The sudden onset of winter weather has brought snowfall to the bustling city of Istanbul. The cold wave originating from Siberia has caused snow to blanket various parts of the city, creating a winter wonderland for residents. The snowfall has been particularly heavy in certain areas, making it difficult for drivers to navigate the roads.
In regions such as Seyrek, Küçükçekmece, and Sultangazi on the European side, as well as Çekmeköy, Sultanbeyli, and Kartal on the Anatolian side, the snowfall has been relentless. The North Marmara Motorway in Çekmeköy has become a challenge for drivers, with road conditions deteriorating rapidly.
Unfortunately, the snowy conditions have led to accidents on the roads, with some vehicles losing control and colliding with obstacles. Public transportation has also been affected, causing delays and disruptions for commuters. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has issued warnings for motorists to use caution and equip their vehicles with winter tires and chains.
Despite the challenges posed by the snowfall, some residents have been enjoying the wintry weather, taking the opportunity to play in the snow and capture picturesque moments. The General Directorate of Meteorology has forecasted that the snowfall is expected to continue, creating a snow cover of around 5-15 centimeters in Istanbul.
As the snowfall is expected to persist until the weekend, residents are urged to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel. The authorities have also advised against venturing into areas prone to avalanches and to stay updated on weather alerts. While the snow may bring inconvenience, it also offers a chance for the community to come together and appreciate the beauty of winter in the city.
