South African Parliament votes to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel
In a recent voting held in the South African Parliament, 248 South African MPs voted yes to the motion, while 91 voted no. The proposal aimed to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel and close the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria.
The proposal, brought to parliament by the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in South Africa, was also supported by the ruling African National Congress (ANC). This decision has escalated tensions between South Africa and Israel.
Prior to the vote, the Israeli administration announced that it had recalled Pretoria Ambassador Eliav Belotsercovsky for consultations against the statements made by South African officials about the attacks on Gaza. In a meeting with BRICS leaders, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that Israel clearly violated international law and committed a war crime in its attacks on Gaza. He urged the international community to take urgent and concrete steps towards a fair and peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Palestine.
