SpaceX Expands Global Coverage: Launching Satellite Internet Service in Mongolia

Mongolia Grants Licences to SpaceX for Internet Services via Starlink Satellites
Mongolia has recently granted two licences to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, allowing the company to operate as an internet service provider using low-orbit satellites. This decision brings high-speed connectivity via Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite communications service, to millions of internet users in Mongolia, as announced by the government.
Starlink, which operates a fast-growing network of over 3,500 satellites in low-Earth orbit, is known for providing reliable connectivity in remote areas. With the implementation of Starlink in Mongolia, even harder-to-reach regions will now have access to the internet.
While Mongolia already benefits from a network of fibre optic cables that provide extensive coverage for high-speed internet, the government believes that the technology offered by SpaceX will bridge the gap and provide greater access to remote areas. U.Nyam-Osor, the Minister for Digital Development and Communications, stated, “This technology will provide greater access to hard-to-reach areas.”
Cooperation between the Mongolian government and SpaceX was officially initiated during the 2023 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona back in February. Furthermore, last month, Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene held a virtual meeting with Elon Musk to discuss potential investment and cooperation in the electric vehicle sector, highlighting the growing partnership between the two entities.
This collaboration between Mongolia and SpaceX signifies a significant step forward in expanding internet connectivity and digital access across the country. The licences granted to SpaceX will enable the company to bring reliable and high-speed internet services to even the most remote corners of Mongolia, empowering its citizens with enhanced connectivity and opportunities for growth.
