Spanish Company Invests in Ammonia and Urea Complex in Aktau

Técnicas Reunidas to Build Ammonia and Urea Complex in Aktau

The Spanish company Técnicas Reunidas, known for its expertise in the design and implementation of industrial projects, has announced its plans to build an ammonia and urea complex in Aktau. This announcement was made by the Prime Minister’s office on December 14.

During a meeting with Técnicas Reunidas’s Chairman Juan Lladó, Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov expressed his support for the cooperation between Técnicas Reunidas, KazAzot, and KazMunaiGas in the development of project documentation for this new complex, as well as for polyethylene production in the Atyrau region.

The construction of the ammonia and urea complex is expected to introduce the production of urea in Kazakhstan, a unique nitrogen-containing fertilizer suitable for all types of soil.

Técnicas Reunidas has been involved in engineering works in Kazakhstan’s oil and gas industry in the past and opened its office in Astana in 2020. Chairman Juan Lladó expressed the company’s commitment to finding the best solutions and ensuring efficient construction in partnership with local companies.

This collaboration comes at a time when trade between Spain and Kazakhstan has seen a significant increase, with a 42% rise in trade transactions between the two countries last year. Spain is one of Kazakhstan’s leading economic and trade partners in the European Union.

In addition to Técnicas Reunidas, other Spanish companies have invested approximately $300 million in Kazakhstan since 2005, with well-known brands such as Pronovias, Maxam, and Inditex being widely represented in the country.

Prime Minister Smailov highlighted the growing presence of European companies in Kazakhstan as a reflection of the nation’s attractiveness as an investment hub. With accumulated investments surpassing $175 billion, the European Union stands as Kazakhstan’s largest trading and investment ally, with EU nations investing $5.2 billion in the Kazakh economy in the first half of this year alone.

The cooperation between Técnicas Reunidas and Kazakh companies for the construction of the ammonia and urea complex represents a significant step in the strengthening of economic ties between Spain and Kazakhstan, and the continued growth of investment and trade partnerships between the two countries.
