Speaker of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly responds to questions at April 23 Reception
Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş has recently addressed journalists at a reception held in the Parliament to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.
During the reception, Kurtulmuş discussed the importance of creating a political climate for the formation of a new constitution. He emphasized the need for sincere contributions from all political parties, non-governmental organizations, universities, and the legal community in Turkey. Kurtulmuş also highlighted the importance of unity and integration in constitutional discussions, urging everyone to participate constructively in the process.
When asked about the possibility of a new constitution or a constitutional amendment, Kurtulmuş stated that the method of decision-making should precede the essence of the constitution. He mentioned the importance of determining a procedure that can be accepted by a majority of political parties in the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
Kurtulmuş also revealed plans to meet with political party representatives to discuss the constitutional process further. He expressed his hope that a consensus could be reached without the need for a referendum, involving more than 400 deputies in the decision-making process.
Regarding President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s upcoming meeting with political party representatives, Kurtulmuş confirmed that discussions would continue in a sincere and respectful manner. He encouraged open dialogue and constructive engagement to achieve a successful outcome for Turkey and the Grand National Assembly.
