Starbucks ordered to pay $50 million after hot coffee burns delivery driver

Starbucks Faces Lawsuit for Hot Drink Burns in Los Angeles
A Starbucks branch in Los Angeles is facing a lawsuit in 2020 after a customer, Michael Garcia, suffered serious burns when a hot drink was spilled on his genital area during a car service visit.
Garcia’s lawyer, Michael Parker, stated that his client ordered three drinks, but one of them was not securely placed in the transport container and spilled on Garcia when it was delivered.
Court records show that Garcia suffered physical pain, mental distress, a decrease in quality of life, deformity, loss of physical function, and anxiety as a result of the incident.
Starbucks has announced that they will challenge the court’s decision. In a statement, the company expressed regret over Mr. Garcia’s injuries but disagreed with the jury’s decision and deemed the compensation amount excessive. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards in their stores.
This case is reminiscent of the infamous 1994 lawsuit against McDonald’s, where a customer named Stella Liebeck received third-degree burns from hot coffee and was awarded around $3 million in compensation.
The outcome of the Starbucks lawsuit remains to be seen as both parties continue to navigate the legal proceedings.
