State Secretary Potápi Affirms Hungarian Community in Croatia as Integral Part of Hungarian Nation
Hungarians in Croatia: Celebrating the 176th Anniversary of Hungary’s Revolution
On Friday, Árpád János Potápi, the state secretary overseeing policies for Hungarian communities abroad, marked the 176th anniversary of Hungary’s 1848-49 revolution and war of independence in Croatia’s Suza (Csuza). Potápi emphasized the importance of ethnic Hungarians in Croatia, stating that they are an “inalienable part” of the Hungarian nation, just as they were in 1848.
Reflecting on the historical significance of the Hungarian community in Croatia, Potápi highlighted the contributions of those from Baranja (Drávaszög) who joined the Hungarian revolution and freedom fight in 1848. He paid tribute to Gedeon Ács, the camp chaplain of revolutionary leader Lajos Kossuth, by laying a wreath at his tomb. Ács played a crucial role in supporting the Hungarian cause during exile and upon his return to Suza, where he continued to serve his community as a pastor and teacher.
Looking ahead to Croatia’s upcoming parliamentary elections, Potápi expressed optimism for local Hungarians to unite and secure representation in the country’s next parliament. By joining forces, he believes that the Hungarian community in Croatia can effectively advocate for their interests and ensure their voices are heard at the national level.
As we commemorate the 176th anniversary of Hungary’s historic revolution, let us remember the resilience and spirit of those who fought for freedom and independence. The Hungarian community in Croatia continues to uphold these values and make valuable contributions to both countries.
