Statement from Istanbul Governor Gül on May 1

Istanbul Governor Announces May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day Plans
In a recent statement, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül outlined the city’s plans for May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day, emphasizing a balance between celebration and public safety.
The planned events for the day will take place in the Kadıköy and Kartal districts, where activities organized by two separate labor confederations have been authorized under the relevant legislation. These events aim to honor the contributions of workers while adhering to legal standards.
However, Gül announced that gatherings in the districts of Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Şişli, and Fatih will be restricted. This decision was made to ensure the safety of citizens and to maintain public order amid rising concerns over potential unrest.
The Governor expressed discontent with calls for gatherings at Taksim Square, labeling them as provocative actions that could lead to conflict with security forces. He urged citizens to refrain from engaging with these illegal calls that could disrupt public peace.
"The expectation from our dear citizens is clear: Please do not rely on illegal calls that may disrupt public order," Gül stated, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment during the celebrations.
As Istanbul prepares for May 1, authorities will remain vigilant to ensure the safety and security of all participants while allowing designated celebrations to unfold as planned.
