
Stewart Believes Positive Movement the Best Opportunity Post-2017

President Ersin Tatar of North Cyprus expressed optimism about the proposal to open a new crossing gate in Haspolat and stated that he believes the Greek Cypriot side will not oppose it. In a recent meeting with Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Cyprus, both parties discussed various issues including crossing points, the Pile road, and upcoming leader meetings.
Tatar emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two sides for mutual benefit. He also mentioned the need to address concerns related to transit passes and the completion of the Pile-Yiğitler road. Additionally, preparations are underway for an extended meeting involving leaders and guarantor countries, with the expectation that it will take place in February or March.
The President highlighted the significance of developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and reiterated Turkey’s support as the guarantor country. He also acknowledged the upcoming report presentation by Colin Stewart to the United Nations Security Council and expressed hopes for a balanced assessment of the situation in Cyprus.
